Arab countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region increased their renewable energy capacity by 57 percent from mid-2022 to mid-2023 to reach 19 GW, a new Global Energy Monitor report found.

The observatory predicted a further rise of half by 2024, although the region still needs to double this capacity 20 times from renewables to replace gas-based power. This situation reflects the fact that the region is still addicted to the use of gas in power plants, which could hinder the clean transformation that governments are seeking by pumping billions of dollars into new investments.

Arab countries face many challenges in achieving the transition to clean energies given the political, economic, environmental, social, and human capital problems.
