The IMF, the World Bank, and Morocco have decided to hold their annual meetings in October in Marrakech despite a devastating earthquake near the city that killed more than 2,900 people.

Bank President Ajay Banga, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, and Moroccan Economy Minister Nadia Fattah Alaoui confirmed in a joint statement that the meetings would take place from the ninth to the fifteenth of October in Marrakech, with some changes made to adapt "to circumstances."

Senior IMF and Bank officials made the decision after a direct request from the Moroccan authorities, who demanded that the two international institutions go ahead with the meetings, which are expected to attract between 10,000 and 15,000 people to the Moroccan tourist city.
