Portuguese authorities are preparing to raise the minimum wage from January by 7.9 percent, from 760 to 820 euros, under an agreement signed by the government, some unions, and employers' representatives. The move underscores the government's commitment to boosting workers' incomes and promoting social justice in Portugal.

Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa considered that this agreement endorses the wage hike and improves the competitiveness of the Portuguese economy, stressing that the planned increase is the largest annual increase in the minimum wage ever. Portugal has more than 745,000 civil servants whose average monthly salary is about 2,000 euros ($2,117.40). Employees receive 14 salaries during the year spread over the 12 months, in addition to a salary on Christmas and another during the summer holidays.
