Japan’s exports fell in August at a slower-than-expected pace, as shipments to its largest trading partners in Asia rebounded, despite continuing contraction for the fourth consecutive month.

Japanese exports fell 0.1 percent year-on-year, compared to a 2.6 percent decline in July. Imports dropped at a slower pace of 5.2 percent compared to a 7.4 percent fall in July, but still came in higher than the 4.2 percent decline expected in a Reuters poll.

Exports of the world’s fourth-largest economy entered contraction territory while the country faces tariffs imposed by the United States and slowing demand after a surge in exports at the beginning of the year.
