U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his controversial claim that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told him India would stop buying Russian oil. Trump issued a stern warning to New Delhi, saying it would continue paying “huge customs tariffs” if it failed to fulfill this pledge.
Trump said, “I spoke with Prime Minister Modi from India, and he told me he would not deal with Russian oil.”
When asked about India’s denial of any such conversation, Trump responded threateningly: “If they want to say that, they’ll keep paying huge customs tariffs—and they definitely don’t want that.”
India is currently the largest buyer of seaborne Russian oil, benefiting from discounted prices resulting from Western sanctions on Moscow following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
