The U.S. Senate approved a settlement that would end the longest government shutdown in the history of the United States, putting an end to weeks of stalemate that disrupted food aid for millions of citizens, left hundreds of thousands of federal employees without pay, and caused major disruptions in air travel.
Although the agreement paves the way for a vote on appropriations in December, it does not guarantee their continuation.
The agreement would restore funding to federal agencies that lawmakers had allowed to lapse on October 1. It would also halt President Donald Trump’s campaign to reduce the federal workforce and prevent any layoffs until January 30.
