U.S. President Donald Trump signed legislation ending the longest government shutdown in American history, following a vote in the House of Representatives to resume food assistance, pay hundreds of thousands of federal workers, and restart the air traffic control system.

With Trump signing the bill approved by the Senate, federal employees will return to work after a 43-day shutdown, though it remains unclear how quickly government services and operations will fully resume.

The law extends funding until January 30, which could put the federal government on a path adding about $1.8 trillion annually to its $38 trillion debt.
